Examining all of the documents of land purchases, Pompey B. Hines’ signature on those documents was that of an X. It is not a great revelation that Pompey B. Hines could not read nor write, the slave master did not have a need for an educated slave. Despite this handicap he became a successful farmer and somewhere alone the was he learned to count money. At the time of his death in 1919 his estate was conservatively valued at $7731.12.
Some time during his journey he probably that that if he could read and write then there would not be any limitations on what he could archive. Early on Pompey realized that education is the key to prosperity. At a time when 5-6 years of schooling was a sufficient education for black children, Pompey decided that his baby girl would attend high school, she would attend Dorchester Academy.
In the early 1900 the State of Georgia did not provide high school education for black children, the AME Church operated (2) high schools in the State of Georgia for black children. One of the schools was located in Liberty County Georgia, it was the prestigious Dorchester Academy.
In this family of (17) children, Esther was considered to be highly educated and this set a precedent among her siblings . He brother James E. Hines, Sr. wanted his (3) children to educated like his sister Esther and they were, all (3) of his children graduated from Dorchester Academy. His son James E. Hines, Jr. was the first to attend college.
It started with my grand father, Pompey, and each succeeding generation has raised the bar. In a short span of 50 years the descendants has obtained more than 150 COLLEGE DEGREES. I anticipate that the young descendants of Pompey B. Hines will review the names of those who have received a college degree in the family and will be inspired to continue our family tradition of making education a top priority.
